I too have washed mine, and they worked. however, when I stepped on one of them, they never were the same, and eventually died.
Why cut off the cord - you like the white - or you have some spare buds around?

Other way around. I threw away the apple buds and kept the cord so I could use the inline mic, and attached my nice high-quality in-ear monitors to the cord.
